Tyre Rubber Containers really are TOUGH!

31st Oct 2014

It’s obvious really, we see tyres everywhere, every day. They are used on cars, trucks, airplanes, tractors, forklifts, juggernauts, bicycles even prams – they need to be tough! But what happens when they are all worn out, there is a common perception that Tyre Rubber is hard to recycle or dispose of. When there is more than 250 million of them being produced every year it’s kind of important we find something to do with them when their primary purpose has been fulfilled. Tyre shredding is common and hiding that in landfills is where a lot goes and there is obvious environmental concerns with that.

But what is Tyre Rubber? Synthetic rubber can be used to make tyres but usually natural rubber is the main source. Natural rubber is found in of course rubber trees, it comes in a milky substance. To get its ‘toughness’ it needs to be heated with chemicals added through a process called Vulcanisation or curing – this is what gives the rubber it’s strength. This process was actually discovered by accident back in 1839

Now what ways can we use tyre rubber to eliminate or at least reduce this disposal problem by filling up landfill. Some of the more common re use methods include building houses with them (these are called ‘Earthships’… honest look it up!), artificial reefs, shredded rubber is used to backfill for retaining walls or on road ways, ground rubber is used for paving, flooring, to make blocks, pallets, as a infill on synthetic grass field turf, a shock absorber in playgrounds or on athletic fields or… you can make tough containers from it

Tyre Rubber containers are mainly used on construction sites or in rural areas, specifically equestrian farms where you want something that will outlast a lot of abuse. In the many situations, a plastic tub from some of the large national chains like Bunnings of recycled plastic (manufactured in Asia for $1) just won’t cut it. But you know this already because you have tried them and they just don’t last. The Kitncaboodle.com.au tyre rubber range have been moulded into 6 different size shaped containers. http://www.kitncaboodle.com.au/brands/Tyre-Rubber-Range.html

With 2 sizes of bucket and 2 sizes of skips they are perfect for feeding horses or carrying heavy items like bricks. We regularly get feedback on the Tyre Rubber Range and how tough they are and how long they last. Just try it out yourself and see how tough they really are. They can be left outdoors in all types of conditions they won’t become brittle or breakdown for a long, long time. They are fully moulded so the handles won’t break off when you are carrying a heavy load. The complete Tyre Rubber Range as mentioned has 6 items, there is also a hanging manger for a horse feeder which hangs off the fence or a deep trough that can be left on the ground as a horse feeder too.

But not just tough containers can be made from Tyre Rubber, they can be dressed up too as flower pots. Still tough and long lasting but with an attractive cross stitch to bring some beauty to Tyre Rubber. With two types of Tyre Rubber planters available, Tall set of 3 and short set of 3 there is a great gift for the gardener you know while being good to the environment too.

And if all else fails and you just want to do the right thing then just go to the local landfill, pick up a few old tyres yourself and just DIY!
